Personal Interview - Dr. Bubbles Founder Mr. Adnan Sarkar
Bubble Tea is the name given to the wide
variety of refreshing flavoured fruit teas and milk teas served ice cold or
piping hot with cherry natural tapioca balls that you suck up through a big fat
straw! Yum – It’s like a quirky snack and drink in one! The tapioca balls are
sometimes referred to as ‘Pearls’ or ‘Boba’, which some people say over time
has evolved in to the word ‘Bubble’ – Isn’t it interesting how language can do
that? However the true origins of the name come from the small floating bubbles
that are created by the vigorous shaking involved in making Bubble tea. We have
a specialist shaking machine that times this process to perfection! Here is an
Exclusive Interview with Bubbles Founder Adnan Sarkar.
1. What made you start up this unique venture?
Any Specific reason for this name?
When we entered
the market, we realised that there was a huge gap for ‘healthy junkfood’ or
even healthy junk beverages. We felt that this space could be tapped and some healthy
junk that is also tasty can be introduced. That is the reason we came up with
the term ‘Doctor’ which is gives out a sensible image and the term ‘bubbles’ which
gives a careless picture. Hence the name Dr. Bubbles!
2. Who is Your target audience?
We are looking at
a large target audience and do not want to limit ourselves to a specific
category. We want to cater to everyone from teenagers to college goers to even
corporates. Basically, the idea is to provide to all kinds of people who want
to have fun with health food.
3. What’s the idea or story behind the venture?
How did it come to an existence? What motivated you to start this own venture?
Bubble Tea finds
its genesis in Taiwan where the drink was invented in the early 1980s. The
refreshing flavoured fruit teas and milk teas served with chewy tapioca balls
sucked up through a big fat straw became a rage in several Asian countries. I
myself come from the hospitality background. I witnessed the craze for Bubble
Tea on one of my trips to South East Asia and at that time I felt that Mumbai
may be game for this new drink. This came as an idea to me and my team and I
have since grown from that to where we are now. Today, Dr Bubbles has a huge fan following especially
since we have made sure that the authentic Taiwanese Bubble Tea was brought to
Mumbai only after back-breaking research and thorough analysis.
4. How do you differentiate between yourself?
When Compare to rest of other competitors?
Innovation! For
us, that is the buzz word. We make sure that all products have an element of
innovation that make them popular among our patrons. We have noticed that most
of our competitors just want to get international product or concepts to India.
But we have always focused on creating something new and funky from ground up.
It is always something new from all over the world.
5.What are the Problems you faced during the
initial stage? How did you overcome with that.
Whenever any new
concept is introduced into the market, there are bound to be problems related
to education and creating awareness about it. We have had very good staff who
would explain to our customers how this concept different and what they should
try. We also focused a lot on social media to create awareness.
6. What are Your Hobbies?
I love solving puzzles
and enjoy travelling a lot.
7. How do you think the hospitality Industry in
India?
The hospitality
industry has grown a lot in India over the last few years. The perception has grown
from a local to restaurant to pubs, lounges, bars, fine dine. We are in a good
space now and there is a lot of scope for more ideas too.
8. What’s your suggestion for upcoming
Entrepreneurs?
I believe it is
always good to plan to adapt and survive. Basically, all ideas are good.
However, some become an instant hit while some take some time, but you will
eventually get there.
9.What motivated you to choose this chai
specialist? No other domain in Hospitality Industry
I think that
every doctor has some speciality. This is ours!
10. What’s your strength as Entrepreneur’s?
I believe that your staff is your strength and
it is good to make the most of their qualities. Hence, I like to involve my
team as much as possible and keep them motivated so I can get the best out of
them.
I have done BMS, MCOMM, and my family is from the
